• December, 1. Convorbiri literare publishes 3 poems written by Veronica Micle, who had been convinced by Eminescu to have them printed. • Vasile Alecsandri – Opere complete (Complete works), Bucuresti • 1876, March 14. Invited to participate to Junimea's public lectures, Eminescu delievers the conference entitled Influenta austriacă asupra românilor din Principate (The Austrian influence on the Romanians from the Principalities), published in the August volume of Convorbiri literare. • March, 15. Timpul (The Time), a newspaper of the Conservative Party, comes out in Bucharest. Its first Director – Titu Maiorescu, editorial secretary – Ioan Slavici. • April, 1. The government of Lascăr Catargi, in which Titu Maiorescu had been the Ministry of Cults and Education, breaks down. • June, 3. Eminescu is discharged again from his job of school inspector. Following D. Petrino's accusations, Eminescu will be subjected to judicial investigations, as to an alleged faulty administration of the Library's stock of books; the law suit will be closed only in 1878, Petrino's charges being shown as indefeasible. • June 13. Forced by his increasingly difficult material situation, Eminescu accepts the job of editor at Curierul de Iasi (The Jassy Courier), in which he'll write both political and economic articles, and literary creations, book, reviews, musical chronicles, notices, thus improving essentially the structure and function of the newspaper. • July, 18. In a desperate need of money, Gh. Eminovici mortgages the Ipotesti estate for 1200 ducats. • August, 6 -18. Eminescu publishes the short story Cezara (Cesara) in Curierul de Iasi. • August, 15. Death of Raluca Eminovici, the poet's mother. She'll be buried near the family's small church, at Ipotesti. • September, 1. Convorbiri literare publishes the poems Crăiasa din povesti (Legendary Queen), Dorinta (Longing), Lacul (The Lake) and Melancolie (Melancholy); in the volumes of November and December – Călin - File de poveste (Călin - Fragments from a tale) and Strigoii (Ghosts). • Titu Maiorescu's Logica (Logics) comes out in Bucharest. • Issuing, in German, of the first volume of Documente privitoare la istoria românilor (Documents on on the history of Romanians), edited by Eudoxiu Hurmuzaki; the work will be translated into Romanian by Eminescu. • P. Ispirescu – Legendele si basmele românilor. Ghicitori si proverburi (Romanian legends and fairy-tales. Riddles and proverbs), in 2 volumes, with an introduction by B.P. Hasdeu • Birth at Hobita-Pestisani (Gorj) of the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncusi (d. 1957), one of the most outstanding representatives of modern sculpture. • 1877, May 9. The Chamber of Deputies proclaims, in an extraordinary session, the State Independence of Romania. After the Russian-Romanian-Turkish war, the Ottoman army is defeated and the independence of Romania is recognized both by the truce concluded in January 1878, and by the International Congress of Berlin, held in June 1878 when, nevertheless, Bassarabia is Yielded to Russia.
